A bridal chaperone, Sharon Au, is modernizing traditional Chinese wedding customs. She founded her company, Sharon Au Wedding Consultants, in 1993 to preserve the dai kam jie tradition, which involves guiding rituals and attending to the bride throughout the day. Au has simplified some customs, such as the three-day ritual of returning to the bride’s family home, and tailors ceremonies to each couple’s needs and background. The kwan kwa, a traditional two-piece bridal outfit, is still worn by 90 percent of her clients.
