In Uganda, rising wedding costs are causing many men to shy away from marriage. A significant number of men in the country, 38% of those aged 15 to 49, have never been married, compared to 24% of women in the same age group. The cost of weddings, including the “bride price,” a transfer of goods or money to the bride’s family, is cited as a major factor in this trend. Many leaders, including President Yoweri Museveni, are urging a return to more affordable, traditional marriage practices.
